One year on: TfL monitoring shows Silvertown Tunnel delivering lasting benefits
New Transport for London monitoring highlights improved journey reliability, increased public transport use and better air quality one year after the Silvertown Tunnel opened.
Transport for London (TfL) has today published its first annual monitoring report following the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel, showing the project is delivering measurable improvements in journey reliability, public transport use and local air quality.
As a long-term investor and developer on the Silvertown Tunnel, Invesis is proud to have worked alongside TfL and our project partners to help deliver a major piece of infrastructure designed to improve connectivity, strengthen network resilience and support sustainable growth across east London.
The independent monitoring demonstrates that the project is already achieving many of its original objectives.
Highlights from the first year include:
- Journey times reduced by up to 58% on key approaches to the Blackwall Tunnel during peak periods.
- Average nitrogen dioxide (NOâ‚‚) concentrations reduced by 17% compared with the year before the tunnel opened.
- Cross-river bus journeys increased by 290%, supported by new zero-emission bus services using the dedicated bus lane.
- Improved network resilience, including a 23% reduction in over-height vehicle incidents at the Blackwall Tunnel.
- More reliable journeys for businesses, freight operators and local communities.
