Working with the University of Ghent to expand student housing through an innovative 33-year partnership
The University of Ghent was growing rapidly and needed to expand its student housing significantly. In 2010, the University selected Invesis as sole investor under a 33-year DBFM contract, with CEI-De Meyer as construction partner and a design by Huiswerk Architecten.
The principal construction challenge was an extremely tight programme. To meet the schedule, the team used prefabricated elements throughout - including complete bathroom pods prefabricated in Italy, transported to site and installed during the structural works phase. This approach allowed the contractor to follow a strict construction schedule, and one of the four buildings was completed a full year ahead of the contractual date.
The project provided 656 additional student apartments for the University, supporting its continued growth as one of Belgium's leading academic institutions. Handback is due in 2045.
