The background

By the late 1990s, Derbyshire Police Authority’s ‘D’ Division originally built in the 1930s, was cramped and crumbling, severely restricted technologically and almost impossible to maintain or secure.

To effectively serve the local communities, Derbyshire Police force required an up-to-date and well-equipped facility with the latest technology, to address the challenges of a modern-day criminal justice system. Therefore, the Derby Police Crime Commissioner decided to relocate and build a new Divisional Headquarters and City Section Station.

In 1999, Invesis were awarded the PFI contract to design, build, finance, maintain and operate the project, located in Derbyshire, England UK, on behalf of Derby Police Crime Commissioner. The 8,000 m2 premises accommodates over 450 police officers and 60 civilian support staff.

By partnering with Invesis, the client received a high-quality and well-designed headquarters, that enables police officers to perform their duties more effectively through well-equipped fit for purpose facilities.

Business value

Invesis and our construction partners consulted with the Police Authority and end-users throughout the design and construction phases, to understand the operational needs of the police officers and the criticality of some areas, for example the cell block and the call centre bureau.

It was vital for the client to work with a trusted partner who had the capabilities to cater for the specialised requirements of the police authority, all the while working within their financial constraints. In doing so, the building was optimised and equipped with the latest communications technologies and state-of the art facilities, creating an efficient, safe and secure environment for police officers.

The concession has been operational for 22 years and throughout its lifecycle, we have successfully worked with our maintenance partners BAM FM, to continuously improve the police headquarters facilities, though building engineering maintenance, cleaning services and facility adaptations for the authority.
