East Ayrshire Community Hospital

The Ayrshire and Arran Primary Care NHS Trust, located in Scotland, entered into an agreement with a consortium led by Invesis for the provision of a 98-bed Community Hospital in Cumnock, Ayrshire. The consortium designed, built, and financed the hospital and currently provides all non-clinical services.

The Trust was one of the first in the National Health Service to procure this type of contract as a PFI scheme. The aim was to create a single site Community Hospital which would meet the needs of the residents of Cumnock, Mauchline, and surrounding areas.

The innovation

A new community hospital of 6,900 m2 floor area provides 50 continuing care and respite beds, 24 GP medium acute beds, a 24-place day hospital, capacity for treating 28,000 outpatients, and is a fully serviced facility, together with a café area set off the main street of the building.

Iain Harris, Head of Concessions (UK) outlines the project in more detail.

„The development was designed to move away from the traditional institutional feel of some older healthcare buildings by creating a more domestic atmosphere within the internal layout.“

Project HandBack

In 2021, Invesis returned ownership of the Hospital to its client, NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

Health board chief executive John Burns thanked Invesis and partners for their role in the 20-year partnership in operating East Ayrshire Community Hospital.

Iain Harris, Head of Concessions – UK, said: „Invesis has been involved in this project for over 25 years, I personally have been involved since April 1999 and the project has been a joy to work on. We have had a fantastic relationship with the client over the full duration of the project and it leaves me feeling a little sad that this now comes to an end. It has however been a very satisfying end with both the client and Invesis getting what they wanted and I wish everyone involved in running of the hospital the very best for the future.“

The facilities management services will continue to be delivered until 2025.
