New Melton Hospital
The background
Melton, a rapidly growing suburb on Melbourne’s outskirts, is one of Australia’s fastest-expanding areas, with an annual population growth of 6.61%. To ensure the healthcare system remains resilient and capable of meeting future demand, the Victorian Health Building Authority has committed over $900 million to deliver the landmark New Melton Hospital—Australia’s first fully electric hospital.
The New Melton Hospital will play a vital role in reducing waiting times at Melbourne’s existing hospitals while addressing the growing and evolving healthcare demands of the outer western region. Featuring 24-hour emergency care, 274 beds, an intensive care unit, maternity and neonatal services, mental health services, radiology services, outpatient care and teaching, training and research spaces.
The project is being delivered by the Exemplar Health consortium—comprising Invesis, Capella Capital, Lendlease, Honeywell, and Compass Group Healthcare— through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement. The consortium is responsible for the design, construction, financing, and maintenance of the hospital for a 25-year period.

In alignment with the broader environmental goals of the Australian government, the fully electric hospital’s design will include world-class Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) technologies to maximise ecological efficiencies and reduce the hospitals carbon footprint. Serving as a model for future health projects in Melbourne.
An extensive design phase has been included in the programme to enhance collaboration between the hospitals end users and designers together with a easy to implement expansion plan to fit the future needs of the communities.
With a growing footprint and portfolio in Australia, including two other major infrastructure
projects – Cross River Rail in Brisbane and Ground Lease Model 2 affordable housing in
Melbourne – this project underscores Invesis’ commitment to enhancing critical infrastructure for communities across Australia.
Key features
- The project will boost the local economy, creating more than 700 direct jobs and 1,700 indirect jobs during construction. Once operational, Melton Hospital will have the capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 patients in the emergency department.
