VP Business Development

Your mission

As VP Business Development you will promote Invesis to the North American market, identify potential investment opportunities, and develop an investment pipeline by securing places in competitive bidding and development teams.


As VP Business Development you will report to the Managing Director. You will work closely with the Business Development team.

The key activities and result areas are as follows:

1. Business development strategy
Develop the North America business development working with other senior leaders on the business development steering group.  Take the lead for developing and executing a detailed implementation plan for the strategy.

2. Promotion of Invesis
Contribute to the development of a communication and engagement strategy for new markets including key messaging and promotional material for Invesis. Working closely with the Business Development Director and supported by the Marketing and Communications team, lead the presentation of Invesis (including our European track record and capability) to external stakeholders through all identified channels (face to face, industry bodies, conferences, social media etc).

3. Building positive relationships that lead to opportunities
Identify key contacts in each target sector/geography and develop effective relationships with a view to identifying and creating opportunities to form consortia and bid for projects.  It is expected that personal contact and networking with government/regulators, potential clients/owners, partners, contractors and advisors will be a key element of the role.

4. Building and sharing knowledge
Through networking and research demonstrate expertise on the North American P3 and wider infrastructure market such that Invesis can anticipate opportunities to form consortia and position itself for projects at the earliest opportunity.  Ensure the effective management of market information through Opportunity Pipeline tool, regularly updated project summaries and the business development steering group.  Share knowledge with other the wider Invesis business development team staff to ensure effective co-ordination and that the whole business is motivated to support the North America strategy.

5. Identify viable opportunities
Through the promotion and engagement in the networks you create, identify a pipeline of potential bidding/investment opportunities. Secure sufficient information about the opportunities to be able to assess the viability of the opportunity (Is it real?  Could it meet our investment criteria? Could we be competitive?) and, if it is viable, develop and implement an action plan for turning the potential opportunity into a live bidding opportunity.

6. Form competitive consortia
Where there are viable opportunities identify suitable consortia partners, contractors and advisors so as to optimize Invesis chances of prequalifying and then securing the contract. The selection of consortia partners and contractors should include an analysis of their capabilities to perform in a chosen sector/project and their financial robustness. Working with the legal team negotiate bidding or joint venture agreements with other investors and agree effective management and financial arrangements for the consortium.  The VP may represent Invesis on consortium steering groups.

7. Secure new business
Once there is a live opportunity and Invesis is part of a consortium, work with the MDs and the wider business development team to identify bid management, legal and project finance support for the bid.  Provide support, guidance and continuity for the bidding team throughout the procurement process and into contract negotiations.  This will include maintaining effective relationships with the client and consortium partners and may include representing Invesis on the bid steering group.

8. Health, safety and wellbeing
Ensure compliance with the Invesis Health & Safety Policy. Set a personal example of leadership in health, safety and wellbeing, acting as a champion to company and contractor employees.

Who are we looking for?

This is a critical position in a leading European infrastructure investor with global ambitions. You will be our first US appointment and will be our visible “face” for the market.  For this position we are looking for an experienced and dynamic networker, who can demonstrate a deep understanding of North American P3 from winning bids and closing deals, and who has a track record of building positive and productive relationships across the industry.

Education and experience

  • Degree educated ideally to post-graduate level (or with a relevant professional certification) in an appropriate field (e.g. construction/engineering and/or finance/legal/management).
  • Demonstrable experience managing, winning and closing, complex multidisciplinary P3 or similar infrastructure/development projects
  • Demonstrable experience of P3 business development including identification of opportunities, building consortia and developing relationships with clients, partners, contractors and advisors
  • At least 10 years’ experience of P3 or similar infrastructure projects

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal sensitivity and is a strong relationship builder and networker – building, maintaining and leveraging relationships.
  • Ability to convince on the basis of solid arguments and strong, transparent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Provides a visible example of leadership – prepared to speak out and sets a clear vision for the team and partners but also demonstrates the ability to listen and reflect on feedback.
  • Strategic planning skills combined with strong judgement
  • Flexible in terms of travel and location. The role will require considerable travel including overnight stays.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Deep understanding and experience of North American (and particularly US) P3 and wider infrastructure markets
  • Ability to explain the legal, financial and commercial framework within P3 contracts and transactions.
  • Highly numerate and comfortable with financial reports and spreadsheets. Must be able to communicate and work effectively with accounting and financial modelling colleagues and with lenders and other financial institutions
  • Strong commercial acumen combined with well-developed negotiation skills
  • Ability to present information in a concise and engaging way in email, letter, report and presentation formats. The role will have a visible public (in the context of the P3 market) profile.
  • Fluent in English. Additional language skills would be an advantage.
